building a new system not giving up on amd yet
have stock heat sink and fan on a amd 2400+ 266mhz 256 cache
I am getting up to 118 F 48 C don't like that.

48 C is neither dangerous nor unusual, especially for a stock fan. Why does 48C "bother" you? It is a perfectly safe temperature.

As Soul Harvester says 48C is not unusual.

However, if you wish to lower your cpu temps which is no bad thing I suggest that you download and install the following two programmes.

Motherboard monitor(MBM5) and Cpuidle you can get both these programmes from www.majorgeeks.com

Install MBM5 first then cpuidle.

It will lower your cpu tems by about 10 to 15 degrees C.

I have an AMD Athlon xp2600+ and at idle it runs at 31C with the above two programmes installed.

The theory goes that for every 10 degrees that you lower your cpu temps it will double the life expectancy of your cpu.

Thanks Guys

my Xeons don't run that hot with stock htsk and fan
I realy never looked at my out of box builds all intel thay just keep running
the last time I built a amd was the slot type 750mhz I added 2 huge fans to htsk.
I just finished putting this together and had boot the first time (all used parts)
the paste I used on cpu was ?able.
machine was on for only a few minute not running any apps
thanks

I will dwnld those programs as soon as I get a better cooler any suggestions?

You are surprised that 1.4ghz cpus are running cooler than a 2000mhz cpu?

Regardless, here is what I stated in another thread about socket A cooling:

For price/performance, the ThermalTake Volcano 9 CU is incredible. It is not as pricey as a SLK900, in fact you can get it online for only $14, and yet it is a very powerful cooler. I use it on every socket A motherboard I own.

not surprised just not familiar with
I don't want surprise , amd says cpu can go to 90C
I would prefer to listen to experts who have built machines with amd chips
I broke down and bought a Silent Boost Quiet CPU Cooler.
I did manage to get the cpu temp dwn by polishing the surface up and found newer paste removed about 5 degree's
seems to be running ok for now

Thats well in range I am actually there with my 2500 xp overclocked but i have really good cooling .. Download both those programs they work great .
