How often do you replace your computer?

I don't replace my system until it really starts to bug me, and even then, I push it to over a year by either overclocking it or other hardware upgrades. So that makes it usually around 4 years.

I rarely replace my laptop unless it becomes defective. But, I do have options here because I have three laptops. By the way, I just do some upgrades like the hard drive and RAM.

I only replace a PC when the motherboard dies or does not support the version of Windows that I want to install.

That's not rational.
if my water cooled Sandybridge-E 3930k .Dual 4gig GTX 670 .with 32 gig (8x4) corsair Dominator GT 2133 XMP with Airflo Pro on ASUS Rampage IV Extreme.
in the corsair Obsidian 800D
with the corsair 1200 watt gold psu.

Suddenly quit. Working for any reason. Chuckin it ito the backup position and starting over from scratch .
.wahahaha. Er .um .NO!
this kind of build is long term .only way I would scrap it is if cpu or board died.then I would opt first to look for a replacement.
now if someone else was pickin up the tab on my kit .then that's a whole different bucket of nuts and bolts.

Wich one of 4?

My daily driver was 6 years old with upgraded ,RAM (more of it ) , Better GPU to replace the on board video , AMD 6 core CPU ,upgraded Storage drives including an OCZ Vector 180 SSD , and a discrete sound card .

Eventually after all that it was running windows 10 x64 fine by then and then the main board failed so I ordered this 2016 HP Pavilion Haswell Core i5 tower with 8 GB ram the same day and I got it 4 days later .

I put the the sound card & SSD in here dual booting clean windows 10 alongside the OEM 1 TB metal hdd with a clean windows 10 AU install on it and the OEM bloatware OS nowhere on it .

I found an NOS exact replacement OEM main board cheap on E bay for the old PC , fixed it wiped the drive DOD style re installed windows 10 and sold it for half of the cost of this new one .

The Core i7 HP Elitebook is maybe 3 yrs old , the game box is a late 2011 recently upgraded SB Core i7 box that still plays well with its 2015 nVidia gaming GPU and 650w PSU and there is a Dell Optiplex 780 Core Duo $80.00 e bay score on windows 10 that gets casual use in another room occasionally ,No plans to replace anything here at this time and this Haswel Core i5 daily driver is fine for what I do with it .

When my device is totally unusable and can't work with it anymore. At that time I replace my computer. Though I have another back up desktop as well. So, if anyone is damaged then I can continue with other.

It seems like I end up replacing my laptops every 4 years or so. I am not sure if it is just coincidence or not, but right around the 4 year mark I tend to start having issues with my laptops and repair costs end up being barely lower than buying a new one. I used to get HP laptops though and now I have a Macbook Pro. I am wondering if I'll have a bit more longevity with this one. Hopefully so!

I just got a new monitor more in keeping with the cash spent on the desktop box, now I find out my not that old AMD video card cannot run a 3440 x 1440 desktop at 60 Hz. (30 and 50 are the options), yet I can play the few games I have o.k. WTF!
Now a 1070 graphics card is on the menu.

About 5 to 6 years I would say .

Had a laptop since 2011 that came with an Intel Sandy Bridge i5 and 6 GB of memory and it's still working great . Decided to pick up a desktop with an Intel Skylake i7 that came with 8 GB of ram and I don't see much difference at all .

Five and a half years difference and there really does not seem to be any noticeable performance benefit at all that I can tell.

I bought an updated graphics card but did that because people were saying even if you don't game it will improve general browsing , well it didn't in the least .

The only thing it did was increase my WEI scores but thats it , I returned it and went back to integrated graphics.

I used to upgrade every 2 years. My last CPU (2500k@4.6Ghz) is 6 years old, 3 months and 3 days (got it on Jan 4 of 2011 when it came out). GPU I used to upgrade yearly, but in the last 6 years I have owned a 580 and a 980 Ti. I am waiting for Volta.

So right now, I need to upgrade. I just can't decide if I want to go 1700X, 7700k or wait and maybe get Skylake-X or Coffee Lake. Ideally, Z270 would support Coffee Lake (LOL! but might happen).

Also, ideally the 1700X has growing pains and will get better. I don't know if I want to base a purchase on Game Developers good will though.

Or, get a 7700k, and just upgrade to Coffee Lake next year and sell it all, but that seems kind of stupid too.

:eek:Mine also bought in 2011. Too slow for normal web surfing or gaming. I need to upgrade too, but I don't know what exactly I need.

I don't own a PC but I have my fair share of laptop-changing throughout the years. I find myself switching to a different brand or model between 3-4 years, and my choices usually revolve around Lenovo and Asus. I have a Macbook Air, which the office gave out to each employee a year ago, but it's exclusive to getting office works done.

Hello,I am new to this forum so hey.
I replace my laptop once every 3-4 years-and I buy cheap, about or under 800 us dollar.
My 2 year old Acer (6gb Ram,1.8 GHZ,quadcore processor)runs like new(y)

I buy high end cpu's and mid to high end video cards, I replace them maybe every 5 yrs. But as I've gotten old I'm starting to think there's no real need as I lost a lot of interest in gaming.

I do replace case fans and cases more often, probably every 2-3 yrs.

I rarely need to replace PSU's at all, I buy seasonic 650 watt gold or better....I don't SLI video cards or use a monitor with a rez over 1080p.....Had a 4k monitor and sold it. No multiple monitors either, one 1080p IPS Dell screen is all I need.

Oh, I don't buy pc's ever, built all mine since 1999.

Just replaced my seven year old Dell Studio Laptop with another Dell. My old Dell was still working fine. I gave it to my daughter and she is still using it. Don't know why I replaced it really.
