How to remove write protection of USB mass storage with no visible lock/unlock

I realize this is an old thread but just in case. Running XP and had the same problem with a Centon stick. Nothing written above worked. I was able to copy all files to the hard drive and then....Start/run/ cmd/ format x:
For some reason no Windows program would do anything to that stick but in command mode it was a piece of cake. File protection disappeared on the thing as well.

Run regedit
click on edit/permissions
make sure read and full control are checked for permissions for all that are listed
unplug USB replug it in
write protect should be removed

it works. thanks anyway

David Howard,
Thanks for your earlier post! I'm stuck because the UfixII doesn't seem to have a USB device listed, and when I run it, it says "USB memory doesn't exist". My USB drive is plugged into a USB2 port, and I can access everything on it as normal, so why doesn't it recognise it?

Thanks my sub currently work I delete write protect error from it via......
Click Start->Run, enter: regedit
> Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control
> Does sub-key StorageDevicePolicies exist? If yes, right click to delete this sub-key

I tried many ways to remove that write protection on my stick but nothing's change.

I tried to run cmd and format. but still "Cannot format. The volume is write protected."
What will I do to remove this thing. I can't write any doc to my stick. I need some ways to remove it. Can someone share the best solution. Thank you

Hello , for you all who are still trying to solve this problem there is one thing left to do. I know that most of the solutions which are already given dont work (at least most of them) but, they are nearly correct. So I am not going to talk too much . Basically , what you have to do is :

Step 1:
Go to this directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\control\
again and right click control folder

Step 2:
Select new, then click key and rename the new key #1 folder into
StorageDevicePolicies

Step 3:
Right click StorageDevicePolicies folder and select new DWORD(32-bit) Value
for 32-bit Operating System and select new DWORD(64-bit) Value
for 64-bit Operating System

Step 4:
Rename dword newer folder into WriteProtect, then double click WriteProtect
and change the value data into 0 with hexadecimal base

Step 5:
Right click on the newly created folder, then click on permissions. At Full control and Read , check the both boxes to allow .

Step 6:
Open my computer and refresh it few times. Eject your USB and re-connect it again.

Step 7:
Plug in your usb again into your computer and format it as normal.

If I helped you , please leave a like so the rest people having the same issue may fix theirs aswell :)

Try this ..it definitely works...I found it after lot of research online..

https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6202-usb-flash-driver-format-tool.html

download and use Ufix-II

all the very best !! (y)

Thanx yes it worked :)
I had 100 useless pendrives from my office, all were locked
after alot of search on google I found your reply and it worked
onlu Ufix II , none of others (I tried nearly all on other website ) (in windows 10)
it takes nearly 15 minutes/pendrive to completely remove restrictions.

I have the one and only answer. But 1st, let's dispatch some myths: #1 - This is not a Windows or software problem. #2 - There is no registry fix, and this is not malware related. So, I have had this problem over time, with many different makers USB flash drives. I can assure you that the problem is with the physical drive and not the PC. So, what needs to be done is reset the physical USB device, and to do this you need a utility to do this. Formatting the device will not work, you essentially need to reset the controller on the device with a utility that specifically does this. I can almost 100% guarantee all data will be lost on the device, so make a backup before doing a reset. Start off with the HO format utility, but when that does not work you will have to Google for the reset utility, it was from a known flash drive maker, maybe Sandisk or Crucial? It is simple to run, it reset the controller onboard the flash device, then you are free to format it and use it like normal. Sorry I could not find a copy of the file, not sure where I put it.
