How to set up a router

I am connected to the Internet with a cable company box. My home telephone works also through this box.

I don't know how to connect a different router so I maintain both services.

Keep phone in current cablemodem/router/phone box - otherwise phone service will stop working. As for the router, connect your router to LAN of cablemodem & WAN of your router -- this will allow it to work just fine. You won't run into issues unless you need to port forward, in that case you'll be what is called Double NAT'd. In a double NAT'd situation, you have to forward ports twice. Hope this helps!!

Connect the two router LAN<-->LAN and disable DHCP in the second, The first will then support all devices on both routers.
