how to trouble shoot windows98se and MSN

I am really bummed coz I have a person a while ago who asked me how to fix windows 98 and MSN. She can access IE perfectly but when she signs in to her MSN and check her email her pc hangs up and does and automatic shutdown...

please advice what to do the next time it happens!!!
