HP desktop running on Windows 7- loud whirring

I have a loud whirring noise coming from my HP Tower. This happened about a year ago also. At that time, I found a posting that walked me through shutting off a program in Windows 7 and it worked!! I recently did a windows update and it must have turned that program back on because the noise is back. Of course, I didn't save the article from a year ago and can't find it now. Anyone know what program I need to shut off????

Open the tower and carefully "look" for the source of the whirring noise. It could be coming from a fan or hard drive... Sounds more like the CPU cooling fan
