I just did my 300th or so board
dual xeon 2.8 with new copper heat sinks
on first post 1 board just beeps long for about 8 beeps
    no video
2nd board 1 long continous beep overheat light comes on
by the way 1 cpu at a time to test
with 1 cpu board stays on
but the other cpu 1 beep and shuts off
can't send back the cpu's could it be something else not
these do this as soon as powered on

This sounds like bad motherboards, not CPU's or memory

    hi sam,

you should be able to rule out overheating by removing > cleaning > re-applying compound > and re-installing your heatsink(s). do you have a physical temp probe (not software) that you could use to check your temps?

anything is possible, but it seems unlikely that 2 boards would both be bad.

I tried looking up your beep code but could not find anything for "8 long beeps". i don't know what BIOS your motherboard uses, but here is a good list of beep codes from all the major BIOS brands, maybe one of those codes matches the error you're receiving?

    good luck

looks like buying more xeons this week
just bought more memory just in case
    client getting antsy

    new memory came in
diff types of same memory who whould'a known
pc2100 ecc reg'd are not all the same it seems
so now the boards are tested with a older xeon from ebay they post
the 2 xeon's bought from dealer are the bad items and one goofy stick of smart memory
I thought smart was reliable "oh well'
finally finished main parts scraped the whole lower end xeons and went for 3ghz 64 bit 800mhz fsb
