Those in attendance at the annual QuakeCon gaming convention this past weekend were treated with a special sneak preview of Doom - a reboot of the original 1993 game that kicked off the franchise. According to multiple reports, id Software showed off a single-player demo with action taking place both inside and outside of the UAC research facility on Mars.

Cameras and video recording equipment were prohibited during the demo so all we have to go on is first-hand reports.

From what we are hearing, the art style looks a lot like Doom 3 but that's where the similarities end.

Virtually everything about the game has been designed with the spirit of the original in mind including fast-paced combat, ridiculous weapons, non-regenerating health and a bevy of familiar enemies such as hell knights, cyber demons, revenants and mancubbi, just to name a few.

Oh, and gore. Lots and lots of gore.

In one scene, for example, a demon ripped off the player's arms and beat him to death with it. As you can imagine, antics like this certainly got attendees pumped up.

The game will be powered by the Id Tech 6 engine with a commitment to run at 1080p at 60 frames per second. It'll arrive on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - no mention of dated console ports here.

The fourth installment of the iconic first-person shooter likely made its first and only appearance of the year as several reports indicate the game won't be seen again publically until sometime in 2015.

So the player's arms are attached to each other?? That's more hideous than the demons.

I think that if they understand the importance of keeping true to the original's strenghts they may have a real winner here. Just hardcore old skool long levels, lots of monsters and clever level design. Forget about "regenerating health" and of course have quicksave on PC, that kind of thing.

Meh, beating the player to death with his arms is one thing but I would've thought it more fitting if the demon ripped of his face and shoved it up his nought.
