This is optional but I think it may fix you up. My guess is that Norton is over protecting IE causing the slow down. We can get you a better toolbar and better Host file than what they have anyways

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\coShared\Browser\2.0\coIEPlg.dll
O2 - BHO: Symantec Intrusion Prevention - {6D53EC84-6AAE-4787-AEEE-F4628F01010C} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\IDS\IPSBHO.dll

Have Hijackthis fix these entries

Go to add/remove programs and look for these to uninstall:
Symantec Host IDS
Symantec Browser (anything)

then navigate to and delete
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\coShared\Browser <-This folder

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\IDS <-This folder

Your making progress BD. I fixed the 3 files in Hijack This. I had to change my Norton setting to off in order to delete the two O2 lines but did get them fixed.

Under add/remove programs in control panel. The only Symantec programs I have listed are Live Update and Norton Internet Security (Symantec Corporation). I did not remove these. Should I?

Also, when I went to delete the two folders under Symantec Share, it would not grant me access to delete either the Browser or IDS folders.

I did turn off all the Norton Firewall and Internet protection settings and IE loaded and ran Much faster so I think your theory that Symantec is over protecting has merit. Should I uninstall all of Norton and use a different firewall and internet protection software?

That option is up to you, I personally don't like Norton, they have some great tools but their protection is not that great, and as you can see can frequently cause performance issues.

If you would like to rid yourself of Norton, I will recommend how to do it while also increasing your security.

-------------------------------------------------------

First thing first - to remove Norton run this Removal Tool
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

----------------------------------------------------

Install one of these Firewalls, I prefer ZoneAlarm or Comodo - depends on what you want ZA is simple but effective, Comodo is more effective but can become annoying because it is so protective.

Firewalls
Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most commonly used:
Comodo
Kerio
Online Armor
Zonealarm

--------------------------------------------------------------

For anti-virus there are basically 3 options - I recommend Avira Antivir, but they are all similar

Anti-Virus
AVG 8.0 Free
Avast 4 Free
Avira Free

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol

-----------------------------------------------------------------

For Anti - Spyware You should keep Spybot

and also choose either SUPERantispyware or Malwarebytes Anti-malware

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

SUPERantispyware

Just a small note:
To be followed for any uninstallation:
You will need to make sure though that it does not start when you boot, or it will not allow the uninstall:

Start> Run> type in ''msconfig' without the quotes> Selective Start-up> Startup tab> uncheck the process that is for this> Apply> OK.

Reboot> Close the nag message that comes up after checking 'don't show this message again'.

Now do the uninstall in the Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs.

And AVG has added an antispyware program to v8 of antivirus program.

As well as a "Security Bar" that is actually a yahoo toolbar, you have to opt out if you don't want it during the install

Also I thought the Norton Removal Tool stopped the services and unloaded the modules from memory before removing?

BD, have removed Norton and installed the programs you suggest. IE and MSN work fine now! You are the Master. Thanks so much for you help and personal attention to this problem. I really appreciate it. I also sent you a PM.

Glad it worked for you. If you ever have any more questions about those programs I suggested let me know.

Regards,

BD
