  1. ok i'm connected to the internet. (that part is for Shaw23 :p )... well i'm using Sygate Personal Firewall and i'm not quite sure how to use it properly. there are alot of sites that i cannot browse/login to when it is enabled. any idea on how to get it to work properly so that i can go to those sites that won't work?

or does anyone know of a good firewall that will not block sites?

Have you checked to see if your firewall says its blocking a particular site? If it is just change it to allow. I am not familiar with that Firewall (I use ZoneAlarm) so I am not sure where to check the settings.

blocking sites is typically a side-effect of a poorly configured firewall -- not a feature :)

tell me of your wiring and installed equipment; from your line (dial-up, modem)
thru all connected devices to finally your system(s). This will give some
insight as to the FW configuration needed.

I need to know the physical hardware installed. This impacts the file sharing setup.

    here are some guidelines:
    disallow fragmented packets
    allow ping in/out bound
allow outbound to any ip ports 25,110,143 # these are email access
allow outbound to any ip ports 80,443 # these are browser ports

the file/print sharing I'll defer until you reply with the network info.

you look at the tag on each device to locate the vendor/model number.
also describe the connections between the devices, starting from the modem.
