okay, well I completed the steps, waiting on restart, and at the risk of sounding like an *****.... how do I reinstall the wireless adapter?

Wait on that yet.
I have couple of other ideas.

Restart computer in Safe Mode with Networking and see, if you can connect from there.

Also....

Download OTL to your Desktop.

* Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
* Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

netsvcs
drivers32 /all
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
%systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll
%systemroot%\system32\*.wt
%systemroot%\system32\*.ruy
%systemroot%\Fonts\*.com
%systemroot%\Fonts\*.dll
%systemroot%\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.tmp
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
/md5start
/md5stop
CREATERESTOREPOINT
%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
%systemroot%\system32\user32.dll /md5
%systemroot%\system32\ws2_32.dll /md5
%systemroot%\system32\ws2help.dll /md5
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

* Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

No, in normal mode.

Check your internet connection in Safe Mode with Networking, not Safe Mode.
Then, restart in normal mode and run OTL.

well mine is a dell inspiron 1525 that works....LOL Okay I'm just being silly because I'm exhausted.

His laptop (the broken one) is a Dell Inspiron E1705 --- 2006 I believe?

OTL is running....

The most hilarious part of this, is that his little wireless bubble keeps popping up saying "Connected, signal strength: very good"

When you're done with OTL....

1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

Ping result:

ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again.

While I'm checking OTL logs, try little bit different command...

1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

cmd /c ping 74.125.19.99>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

Not at all :)

I don't see anything interesting in OTL logs, so I'll double check them later.

Go Start>Run, type in:
devmgmt.msc
Click OK.

In Device Manager, expand "Network adapters" entry and let me know what's listed there.
Do you see any yellow "?", or "!" marks anywhere in Device Manager?

I know you're hoping for a yes, but *sigh* they all look kosher

oh and they are:
1394 Net Adapter
Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller
dell wireless 1390 WLAN mini-card

In Device Manager, expand "Network adapters" entry and let me know what's listed there.

I am off to bed....I'm about to drop! I will log on in the morning and try whatever you think will work!

Any idea what on earth could be causing this?

OK.
For some reason, Dell's site is very slow right now, however, when you have a chance, download this wireless driver: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...peid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=true
The above page worked for me just once, so you may want try it in a while.

Then, go back to Device Manager, right click on dell wireless 1390 WLAN mini-card, click "Properties", then "Driver" tab and click on "Uninstall" button.
It may ask you to restart computer.

Then install fresh driver, you just downloaded.

I can't access any of those links anymore, so you may try later, or in the morning.

will do. It's also running slow for me. I guess that's the signal for me to hang it up for another night.

Thanks, Broni! Seriously, thaaaaaaannnnnk youuuu!
