It appears as though a Star Wars virtual reality game is coming to the HTC Vive thanks to Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects studio that has worked on all of Lucasfilm's Star Wars movies.

The game, or as the trailer says, "Cinematic Virtual Reality Experiment'", is called Star Wars: Trials on Tatoonie. A trailer for the game appeared early on the ILMxLabs YouTube channel, before being swiftly removed, showing cinematic VR cutscenes along with gameplay involving players deflecting stormtrooper blaster bolts with a lightsaber handed to you by R2-D2.

There's not a whole lot of information about Trials on Tatoonie available as ILM has yet to officially announce the game. It appears as though it will be available for the HTC Vive (and probably other similar VR headsets as well), although it is labelled as an "experiment" which could indicate a more limited release.

In any case, Trials on Tatoonie is almost certainly set to be officially unveiled at GDC 2016, where a ton of virtual reality games and technologies are being shown off. It won't be ILM's first dive into VR either, as their experimental immersive entertainment division, ILMxLabs, has already released 360-degree videos that tie in with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The trailer for this new Star Wars VR game does make it look fun – as a Star Wars fan I've always wanted to swing a lightsaber in VR – so let's hope it does actually get released to the public.
