    Boot in Safe Mode.
Switch System restore OFF, see how here.
Run a HJT scan and place a tick-mark in the little square before (if still there):

    ...................................................................................................
    O2 - BHO: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll
    O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
    O21 - SSODL: Britannica Ready Reference - {7055D02B-7B1A-4819-E8C4-EB2256768483} - c:\progra~1\common~1\instal~1\engine\6\intel3~1\eimhom32.dll
    ...................................................................................................
Now click on the Fix Checked button in HJT.

When done, from between the dotted lines, delete the highlighted bold files.
Delete all files and directories from: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp
    Repeat this for ALL [usernames].
Delete all files and directories from: C:\WINDOWS\Temp (except files dated from TODAY).
Boot normal. When all OK, switch System Restore back on.

Before you do the above, consider this:
The Verizon Toolbar is considered Spyware, so get rid of it.
The Brittanica .dll-file is an 'unknown'. If you indeed have that on your PC, it may be legitimate, otherwise 'fix' it.
I don't see anything else wrong.

hi there..thanks for the quick reply.
I deleted the 2 bold files you stated..please check out my hijackthis.log now

    have 2 questions..(might be stupid)
-If I currently have microsoft antispyware installed, is that the same thing as a firewall? thinking of installing zonealarm (the free version) what do you think?
-I can't find the ...local settings\temp files..? am i just missing something??

Run HJT again and fix just this one line:
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - (no file)

    MS Antispyware is just that.
Stay away from Zonealarm. It is a resource hogger and frequently causes PCs to crash.
Go to http://soho.sygate.com and get their free personal firewall.
Make sure you switch the XP-internal firewall OFF when you install Sygate.

If that ...Settings\Temp directory is empty, you have nothing to worry about.

In Windows Explorer, turn on "show all files and folders, including hidden and system". See how here.
