Good day everyone~!

I chanced upon this forum while searching frantically for a fix for the hacktool.rootkit trojan that my Fujitsu laptop was infected with. It started about a month ago when my Norton Antivirus detected the trojan but can't seem to remove it..so it'd constantly pop out to warn me about it, while not being able to do anything about it =(

I'm new here and I've read through the sticky "Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions", and did exactly as told. However, while in safe mode and running the AVG Anti-Spyware scan, the system rebooted itself after a while, and did so several times on my repeated attempts. So I have no choice but to terminate it prematurely and saved the log as it is.

Attached are the HJT scan log, AVG anti-spyware log(prematurely terminated), and the combofix log as instructed. I've also done the AVG anti-rootkit scan but it didn't reveal anything. As I've no prior experience dealing with such a nasty trojan, please do help me take a look at it, and kindly advise me on how I should proceed from here...

Thanks so much and have a pleasant day ahead~!!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 from HERE. Save it to your Desktop and extract it.

2. Download the attached avengerscript.txt and save it to your desktop

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by double clicking on its icon on your desktop.

Under "Script file to execute" choose "Load script from file".
Now click on the folder icon which will open a new window titled "open Script File"
navigate to the file you have just downloaded, click on it and press open
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please attach the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply, as well as a fresh HJT log.

Regards Howard

I've done exactly as instructed, and attached are the avenger log and the latest HJT log. Please advise me on how I should proceed from here...
Hope it won't take up too much of your time, thank you again and have a great day ahead~!!

You might want to copy and paste these instructions into a notepad file. Then you can have the file open in safe mode, so you can follow the instructions easier.

Boot into safe mode, under your normal user name(NOT THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT). See how HERE.

In Windows Explorer, turn on "Show all files and folders, including hidden and system". See how HERE.

Open your task manager, by holding down the ctrl and alt keys and pressing the delete key.

Click on the processes tab and end process for(if there).

MemMon.exe

Close task manager.

Run HJT with no other programmes open(except notepad). Click the scan button. Have HJT fix the following, by placing a tick in the little box next to(if there).

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MemMon] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TREK\MemMon.exe

Click on the fix checked button.

Close HJT.

Locate and delete the following bold files and/or directories(if there).

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TREK<Delete the entire folder.

Reboot into normal mode and rehide your protected OS files.

Post a fresh HJT log and let me know how your system is running.

Thanks Howard!! Well the system seems to be working fine for now, and Norton isn't disturbing me anymore...I'm not sure if the trojan/virus is completely removed, though I certainly hope so =)
Attached is the latest HJT log as instructed, please take a look at it and instruct me on how to proceed from here, should there still be traces of malware in the system..
Thank you so much~!!

Have HJT fix the following entry.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Click on the fix checked button.

Close HJT.

Locate and delete the following bold files and/or directories(if there).

C:\windows\ALCMTR.EXE<This is a Realtek file and it`s classed as spyware.

Other than the above, your HJT log is clean.

Turn off system restore.(XP/ME only) See how HERE.

Now, turn system restore back on. This will have deleted all your old restore points and any nasties that are in them. It will also have created a new, clean restore point.

If you have any further virus/spyware problems, please post in this thread.

a rootkit virus is a virus designed by sony (the company) they made it ages ago to protect the copyright of there games, so if u have put a sony game in ur computer thats the problem, it reports data back to sony and wont allow you to copyright the game.nothing to big really..

Hi topps999.

Your information is incorrect.

There are lots and lots of different rootkits about, the vast majority of which are dangerous.

The sony rootkit was part of their drm software. This got downloaded onto systems via some sony`s cd`s that carried the drm protection software.

Do a search for "sony drm rootkit" and you find plenty of info about it.

For more general info on rootkit infections, see this link HERE.

Hi Howard. Thank you so much for your help. I've encountered a problem while trying to remove the Internet Explorer Start Home Page using HJT. The entry restores itself and cannot seem to be removed even after several tries. Could this be due to my Norton Internet Security? Please advise on what I should do. Thank you very much:)

Download the Autoruns programme from HERE. When the programme runs, click options and make sure the "Hide Microsoft Entries" is ticked. Click the file menu and select refresh. Click the save icon and save the Autoruns log to wherever you want.

Attach the Autoruns log here, along with a fresh HJT log.
