Infrared receiver

  1. I have an infrared receiver that has what I believe is called a com port end on it? It has screws on either side of the plug. There are 9 female holes on the plug. It will hook up to the back of my desktop. But my laptop does not have a com port. It only has usb ports. If there an adaptor that converts this plug to a usb plug? Should it work if there is such a thing?

Yes, serial port USB dongles are very common and yes, it should work no problem.

You can also buy an infrared transceiver that plugs straight to the USB port for sth like $15.

Also, are you sure that your laptop doesn't have an infrared port already?
