Instagram has updated its Hyperlapse app, adding a new Selfielapse feature that lets you shoot time-lapsed videos from your smartphone's front facing camera. The app was previously restricted to the rear camera.
To create a selfielapse, just tap the small button present next to the shutter that toggles between the front- and rear-facing cameras, and start recording. Like before, you can share the video directly to Instagram or Facebook, or save it to your smartphone's camera roll. A point worth noting is that you can’t switch between selfielapse and Hyperlapse while recording a video.
Here are some suggestions from Instagram on how to create the perfect selfielapse:
- Stand still and have a moving background (I.e. Times Square foot traffic, riding a roller coaster).
- Capture yourself walking down the street as your surroundings whirl by.
- Document transformations — getting a new haircut, applying makeup or tying a tie — by propping your phone up against a wall.
- Hold up your phone as you spin around in a chair, or jump on a trampoline.
In addition to the new feature, the app also now supports iPhone 6 and 6 Plus screen sizes.
Released last month, Hyperlapse has already been used by artists and even the White House. The most popular Hyperlapse shared to Instagram is this video by photographer David Guttenfelder for National Geographic, which has received over 370,000 likes so far.
