Installing a slave

Im installing a slave hard drive and if fails at startup.
When i go into the bios, it says MAXTOR - [Model] and the model flashes.
I cant get it to work.
Any ideas?

Just to clarify :The drive is in working order,the jumper is set to slave or cable select(as long as it`s on the middle of the cable),on the first IDE cable.?

all checked and in place, still not working...
