Internet connectivity problem w/ westell modem

This week I have been working on a Dell Dimension computer w/ Windows XP for a friend, I removed 716 tracking cookies from it on my first run with Ad-Aware, I also found an internet connectivity problem.

Every 10 seconds the light on the DSL router (a Westell 4 port switch with Wireless access) for the port that the computer is hardwired into goes out and the computer displays a message stating that there is no cable in the computer. The wireless access continues running and does not disconnect when this happens.

I have already:
Restarted the modem
Replaced the Cat 5E cable
Inserted a new PCI Ethernet adapter (never was recognized by the computer)


Any suggestions would be helpful.
