Internet Exlorer and pop-up issues..

Hello!

Last night, I noticed some erratic behavior from my laptop. Every now and then, Internet Explorer will pop up with an ad site, or when using "Google" in Firefox, my searches are redirected to "help" and "advice" sites. When typing in the URLs of sites, I am led to the site without this problem. I would like to know if there is anything I can do without having to completely format my system.
