    Im helping a friend re-install ME and keep getting this error. Its a full retail version and Im using the key on the sticker. I re-formatted the drive and still get the error.

    Mind the capital letters and note that a zero (0) looks different from a letter o (O)

    No 0's or O's in Windows product keys. It turned out to be a damaged disk. Once again Google beats MS Knowledge Base. Thanks

    A bad hard drive can cause the same problem too, for future reference.

    Most people don't realize that though. :)
