iPad battery question

I've heard the word "cycle" used when I've been googling for recharging my ipad battery & would like to know what it means? Also, is it ok to fully recharge if it 1/2 or 3/4 full with out it messing up the life of the battery?
I'm asking because I've also read its best to have the iPad/iPhone plugged in charging when updating apps.
If the answers are in the manual, I haven't found them.

The newer equipment use Lithium batteries and there is no concern on cycling as was the case with Nicads
