Is this radeon 9800 pro dying?

My buddy bought a Radeon 9800 pro (I think it is used).The card was installed and the newest catalyst drivers installed.When you run games though, there are these patches of coloured tiles that appear and they stay on screen. Could it be that this card is overheating, or was possibly overclocked by the previous owner? I need to get my facts straight when returning this card. Any ideas what else could be the cause for this? We tested the card in CS Source, CS 1.6, UT2004 and Call of duty, and in each case these coloured tiles appeared.
Any help would be appreciated.
