LAN problem

i have two routers,one within modem another without modem.
i connected both together,made the routers without modem as a switch distributed to other computes.
but i'va found my connection speed slower as usual
so i exchanged the routers without modem to switch, then the connection speed become normal.
why?

How did you connect the routers? Also, there are differences between switches. The ones in home routers are crappy bus-based while dedicated switches are usually n-way.
