Laptop boot issues - no post, all lights flash

I have a IBM thinkpad, I have had no real issues with it in the years that I have owned it.

I pressed the power on button yesterday and there was no post and all the lights stated to blink on and off.

I was unable to power it off by holding the ppower button in and had to remove the power lead and the battery.

This is something that I have not come accross before, anyone have any suggestions or hard of similar before?

I just tried to power my laptop up before starting to strip it down.

I now get a different POST.

    3 short, 3 short, 1 short.

Could this still be related to the chip?

    Cheers

DIMM problems. you should check soldering of memory slots via microscopy. if contacts broken - resolder them.
the ADP 3421 death - is typical problem for all t2x series. the poor soldering of memory slots - too.
