Laptop hangs after system restore on Win XP SP 2? Desperate for help.

I am a guest at a friends house and her mom's installed SP2 on Toshiba 1115-S103 running XP Home Build 2600.

They also installed black ice defender and Norton Antivirus.

The computer stalled with e-mail(outlook express) and other programs would hang.

I hit system restore and when I got back 20 minutes later the screen was black.

I rebooted in all modes(normal, safe, last known config) and the system goes through the Win XP loading screen then freezes on black screen.

I really need to get out of this pickle. I've used system restore but avoided SP 2 for a reason.

Please, please help, they are waiting.

computer only has reinstallation cd's from OEM, no original XP disk. microsucks said i have to "acquire" a Win XP CD which is $200. is this how they get you?

You can't get to the blue install area? That is where you'd start the repair from.

If you can't get to the proper installation area, you may want to check with bootdisk.com and some other forums in addition to this one. Chances are someone has made a proper bootable disk from the oem cd. I have no doubt that someone here can or has done it. I'll see if I can find anything.
