Laptop Screen Goes Black Randomly?

  1. I have an HP Notebook 4610. (AMD Processor, WXP.)

About twice a week the screen on the laptop goes completely black, yet the computer is still running. I use the touchpad and try to bring it back, however, it stays black. It is like the brightness was automatically shut off. I've tried raising the brightness and using the touchpad to "wake it up," as well as restoring the computer. The only solution to bring the screen back is to shut the computer down and put it back up via the power button.

    Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem with my Dell laptop

Not sure if this applies to your HP Laptop, I some times get this problem with my Dell laptop. To get past it I use the fn key and f8 which switches between my laptop display and an external monitor, even though I don't have an external monitor attached! You probably have a similar function on your HP. Just a thought.
