In light of the continuing Galaxy Note 7 debacle, Samsung will probably be relieved to find that some of the spotlight is starting to point at its next smartphone, the Galaxy S8. A new leak reported by Sammobile suggests the handset will pack some seriously powerful hardware, allowing it to produce high-quality VR and 4K experiences.

The report claims that the S8 may come with an Exynos 8895 SoC featuring ARM’s new high-end Mali-G71 mobile GPU. Built using the company’s new Bifrost architecture, the 16nm graphics chip is clocked at 850 MHz and offers up to 20% better energy efficiency, 40% better performance density and 20% external memory bandwidth saving compared to the Mali-T880 GPU found in the Galaxy S7.

The Mali-G71 is also compatible with Vulkan, OpenGL ES 3.2, GPU Compute, and Android RenderScript APIs.

Speaking about its cutting-edge chips back in May, ARM executive vice president and president of product groups, Pete Hutton, said: "This technology can make engaging with 4K video, virtual reality, and augmented reality an everyday experience on a mobile device."

Other rumors reported by Tech Updates claim the S8 will ship with a 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 2160 x 4096 – an increase over the 1440 x 2560 found in the S7. It’s also said to feature a 30MP rear camera with optical image stabilization, a 9MP front-facing snapper, a 4200 mAh battery, retina and fingerprint scanners, 64GB or 128GB storage, a microSD slot, and a mini projector.

While some of these rumors are quite probable, such as the scanners and microSD slot, others, like the 30MP camera, should be taken with a big pinch of salt.

Like its predecessor, we'll probably see the S8 announced at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress trade show in February, with the handset launching a couple of months later. As for the price, it’s been suggested that Samsung is eying the $850 mark. Let’s hope there are no problems with that rumored massive battery.

Does it also feature an exploding battery? Seriously though the S7 camera is already amazing this one sounds like a beast. I'm probably gonna upgrade once my plan lets me.

4K display is all I ever wanted from a 5.2 inch display.
Well it depends, if they are going to use it for virtual reality or augmented reality and you are placing it a couple of centimetres from your face, you are going to notice the difference.

I am a big fan of LGs phone, but this is true got an S6 and the camera is way better than that of the LG G counterpart. I couldn't believe how good the video stabilization really is after toying with the zoom while recording.

Most of the people don't care about virtual reality, me included. And if I did care, I would probably use something more powerful than a smartphone. Also not worth the battery drain and performance decrease.

Good for you!! But you know what I've learnt over the internet? That even when you don't use it or need it, for someone else it's not useless =) Hey! Welcome to the internet.

Just like 1080p compared to 1440p on a phone, the difference will be, mostly d ! c k.
I've used both.
The difference from 2k to 4K on a screen that small will also be, mostly d ! c k.
And VR is badass, I am getting an S6 just for that reason. It's a life changing experience and I can't wait to get my new S6 and headset, Samsung just revised theirs too.

Your fixation is showing.

A 30MP rear facing camera... Is that all? Sounds like Sammy's cheaping out. ;)
Meh, these are just rumours and I'll take it at face value. I'll take the Exynos proc. though because that's what we'll get here and I generally prefer them to the Snapdragon equivalent.

So, another fail from sammy if that battery and screen will be the actual thing. it will actually last less time on battery than the s7 edge. sad that sammy wont learn it. full hd=3000+ battery. 2k=4000+ battery and 4k=5000+ battery. why, bc the phone need to last longer than 16 hours!

If we are to see the S8 used more for VR the 2160x4096 resolution makes sense. I had a HTC Vive for a couple of days, the combined resolution is 2160x1200. Was testing this as a flight SIM but found that the resolution was just not high enough. An aircraft with analogue instruments, you could just make out the instruments and readings, the text was not readable. Switching the aircraft to an LCD based cockpit, the screens were completely unreadable, no idea of airspeed, altitude etc. I was using Prepar3D and X-Plane. Hopefully the next round of VR gear has 4k resolution, that is 2k per eye or better.

is heavy vr usage worth it if the phone only last 4 hours with it ?

4 hours of VR usage sounds amazing given the lack of cable from the gear strapped to your head. Now 4 hours for everyday use sounds pretty bad.

Only 4k.. wow phones are lacking these days, wheres the 19k displays with 128GB ram and 92 core phones that last 30min on battery? or heck the 1080/720P displays with 3gb ram & 4 core phones that last 3 days on battery?

Well you may already know but for those that don't, more MP =/= better camera.

Sorry what? Oh right, you'll be using VR on the metro or while you are driving, hell when the boss is in a meeting... even then, 4 continuous hours are more than what you'll probably be using it. And I've ran into fewer and fewer issues charging a newer phone on the run so if you are worried about running out of battery, hell ask anyone and they are probably carrying an extra charger they can lend you =P

I sometimes use my vr for watching series on netflix, just bc the vr tv is larger than my 17" laptop screen. and then I normally take as many parts as possible. I saw daredevil seasons on launch day.

Then you'll probably have a charger close by to charge your phone =)

Yes, it will be usefull for those 3 people that care. In that case, good luck.

although it may seem crazy (which I used to think too) but if you are using it for VR Gear headset, its an extremely welcome resolution. Even with the crazy high resolution of the s6 and s7, you STILL can have a "screen door" effect when watching movies and such. Hopefully, this 4k will remove this small annoyance.

This, I've looked into the VR Gear after reading this type of posts, I'm still not quite sure but I do like the idea of watching movies on this.

Thank you very much for your sincere high hopes, those 3 people will be very glad ;)
