LG G6 to feature an 18:9 aspect ratio and negligible bezels

LG Display has indirectly announced that the company's upcoming G6 smartphone will feature a new 5.7-inch LCD display. We learned back in December that LG would abandon its plans to include modular components, but at that time rumors were predicting a 5.3-inch 2560x1440 display. What is most surprising about the announcement today is the unique aspect ratio for the phone. At 18:9, it will be slightly taller than most typical 16:9 displays.

To make up for the increased screen real estate, the resolution will be bumped up to 2880x1440. This makes it taller than a Quad HD display, but LG has said it will be even thinner than before at less than 1mm. In addition, this wonder screen will feature narrower bezels, be 10 percent more visible outdoors, and consume 30 percent less battery. By chopping off 20 percent of the top bezel and 10 percent around the sides, LG will be able to accommodate the larger screen without increasing the overall phone size too much.

What does LG have planned for these extra few pixels at the top or bottom? Video content is typically created at a 16:9 resolution so stretching it for the 18:9 screen is not an option, though it leaves some possibilities open like dedicated software buttons that never disappear. Another potential idea is that the G6 will feature a second screen area for notifications or elements from LG's user interface; similar to what LG already does with the V20 or like Samsung's Edge line of phones do to a certain extent. LG is almost certain to announce the full details for the G6 at Mobile World Congress in February in the hopes of beating Samsung's Galaxy S8 to market.

Maybe just more screen real estate? It's not like people buy phones to watch Netflix on them, so the 16:9 to 18:9 shouldn't be any real indication to anything. Maybe it's for a special VR headset that will actually show the screen in a more rectangular than square-like way? Who knows, I like the thin bezels tho.

For us old farts, the ability to enlarge the font and not make it like a seeing eye chart will be a nice touch ... oh, touch .... so when will they start marketing the braille version?????

So it'll be THAT more fragile outside of a case, making the thinness completely moot, as everybody will be doubling the thickness in an effort to keep their phones from shattering.

And without a removable battery, there is really no reason to get this over a galaxy s7, especially with LG's tack record of poor QA.
