LG says 4K televisions are old news, shows off 98-inch 8K set at IFA

I'm sorry but I'll jump in the hate-wagon too.

There is no practical use for this, not even for 4k as far as I can tell. With bandwidth being as scarce as it is right now it's hard enough to stream 1080p already and you want four times that? No you want 16 times that now!

This is exactly like the $1.200.- i7 or the $6.000.- video card setups. It's meant for a niche.

I don't like it.

PS: Are there cameras advanced enough that will be able to generate content for 8k resolutions? Are there portable storage solutions that will be able to handle them??

4K does have some uses, but mostly for enthusiast. Some games support 4K and having the benefit to use such a high resolution means disabling Anti Aliasing to get rid of the jagged edges without suffering from performance dips. Seeing that enabling AA is normally taxing on the GPU(s)

For cameras though, 8K isn't really new; or hard to achieve. 7680x4320 = 33177600 which is only 33.2 mega pixels, the Nokia Lumia 1020 snaps 41mp (38mp effective, which on a 16:9 aspect ratio is 8216x4624) with a price tag of about $350.00. Though typical DSLR prices can rocket into the thousands after hitting the 25mp mark.

We'll have to get the news out to Imax production companies about that 43 megapixel phone! They'll be able to throw away all that bulky expensive garbage they've been using up until now, and rent your phone.

After all, "megapixels are everything", are they not?

right but throw the rest and a god conforming calibration & tone, color maping below 8K to 2K *whatever* content and optionally perhaps tone and color re map it subtly but real well like my panel code binned 2016 Samsung 4K HDR 1000 SUHD QDOT TV and you my have something that may surprise you as I did here SRSLY. with or often without color re mapping
given I did a good electronic calibration on a good Sanung SUHD QDOT 4K HDR LCD TV
TBH I also have maybe the best 2014 TV on the planet and its not an LCD,OLED or 4K and the Samsung above handily beats it on any content at all and that 1080p Samsung best plasma TV ain't no slouch in 2017

That 4K television you just paid thousands of dollars for may already be outdated. That's because LG is showcasing a 8K set at IFA 2014. Yeah, good luck spotting individual pixels on this one.
