I recently downloaded and installed Lindows 4.5. Anyone have an opinons on this OS? Compared to the linux distros that I have come into contact with in the past (5+ years ago) it is an amazing OS. I have been able to accomplish most of the tasks that I do in WINXP without serious relearning. I just wondered if any of the "Linux Gods :ekk: " had an opinion or advice on this distro....

I tried Lindows 1.0 when it was new, it didn't even get to installation stage before freezing the whole machine.

Now, I just tried 4.5 for the first time, and I wasn't impressed.

It only boots to graphical mode, doesn't let me see what's really going on (it would help when there are problems).

It can't create / modify partitions, only options are either take over entire disk or entire existing partition.

So, I chose to install it over existing Mandrake 9.2.

It started copying files - again not showing any details, just "installing base" and percentage done.

At 90%, "Installation failed, reason: could not mount. Contact support for assistance."

Could not mount what to where?

This, however, had not prevented LindowsOS from writing a new master boot record..

I'm still looking for a good Linux distro - other than self-made ;)

    Gentoo is superior!

One thing to remember when using Lindows or similar OS' is that they're made for your average joe, and not computer specialists...

Thus having just the graphical loading screen is just what their target audience is expecting, and won't scare the living bejeezus out of them like a text based boot might...

Soul> Maybe include a link for those of us not familiar with Gentoo?

I know, but for example Red Hat and Mandrake boot to graphical mode by default too, and you can press ctrl+alt+F2 to get to terminal (or F1-F4 for other things).

    Fair enough...

I misread your post thinking you said "It boost to graphical mode" instead of "It will not allow me to get a text boot"...

BTW: can you get a bootlog?
If so, I'd imagine they've done it that way to simulate windows more closely...

I tried the free Lindows 4.5 Dev Install. Saying that I'm not impressed is an understatement.

Agreed, not good graphic, internet speed is not good and graphics is suck. Lindows OS Login Screen is easy to break in. Need more advanced like Windows XP.
