My compaq computer crashed and I bought a new HD. I installed the HD and started to install Windows 2000 Pro but I lost the code for activation. I went and bought XP Pro and tried to install it after I reformatted the HD. I now get file copying errors and can't get it to boot up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

take out your ram sticks one at a time until you find the bad one.
do a chkdsk /f on your hard drive to fix errors on it.
make sure your cd is late model. (some cd drives have a hard time copying files from folders in win-xp that are 7 or 8 deep in directories).

Download a diagnostics utility from the maker of your hard drive (the computer should tell you the brand during startup).
