    Looking for help

    I am a 62 year old computer junkie. I have a PC Chips 1.4 P4 computer with 384 megs 2100 ddr ram. When I connect to Earthlink I am told that my connection speed is 26.4 kbps?
    I have a 56k modem. How do I improve this number.
    Thank You in advance for your help! bobk

    If you use an internal Winmodem, replace it with an external V.92 modem.
    Check your telephone connection box(es). Use as short as possible a lead from outlet to PC.
    Visit http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
    That test works on dialup as well.

    Best of luck

    Slow modems

    Bob did you get any more speed out of that modem?

    if not you might have a hardware problem.

    Most homes with more than one phone are wired where one phone connects to the next and so on.

    I solved the same problem by connecting a new line directly to the oulet where I plug the computer modem in to.

    It does involve a little wiring. You might have to add a terminal block to where the phone line enters the house and split off a single unbroken line to the plug where the computer is plugging in to.

    Sir;
    I have a seperate line for my computer which has no other phone hooked up to it.
    I can still only get my modem to run at 28.8 kbps?
    Thanks again for your help;
    Bobk
