Lost 10GB!

I wonder why it is I lose a certain percentage of space on a new external hard drive, or any hard drive for that matter, when I format the darn thing?
This is my forth external hard drive I purchase and each time I lose between 7 to 9 % of space just by going through the process. Any insight on that would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

This is a rather moot subject. Manufacturers advertise in GB where 1GB = 1000MB.
In reality 1GB = 1024MB.
So a (as sold) 100GB harddisk has at the most 97.6GB. Then you lose a few GB for the filesystem and you are quickly down to ca. 7-9% loss.

Thanks!

I appreciate your imput for my inquiries; I always waste valuable time searcing for answers like this and that is why forum's were created and that's a great thing thanks to you.

I like to buy numerous 80GB HDD's instead of a massive 250GB because of this factor. Just food for though.
