Low memory & low virtual memory errors

I have been experiencing low memory and/or low virtual memory error boxes when I play games on my Dell laptop. I play games on facebook and I also have Sims3 games that I play as well. Lately it doesn't matter what I'm on my laptop runs slow. I have gone through many process to correct this problem to no avail. My husband is a computer tech and he can't figure out why it happens. So just saw your site and thought I would give it a shot for any advice. My laptop is an Inspiron duo which is about 3 yrs old. Any help you can give would be very appreciated.

Have you done a virus or other malware scan, and if so what program(s) are you using?
