Lunecase: an iPhone case that lights up when you have an incoming call or text

Ukranian company Concepter has developed an iPhone case that uses electromagnetic energy emitted from the smartphone to detect and alert users about an incoming call or message. Dubbed Lunecase, the product looks like a normal iPhone case but glows with a special notification icon.

As soon as your phone receives a call or a message, it emits enough electromagnetic radiation to power a small miniscule circuit inside the case, which in turn lights up an LED on the back of the case to create a visual notification. The Lunecase doesn't require a battery or a connection with the smartphone, just snap it on and it's ready to work right away.

What's more, it's smart enough to differentiate between a call and a message, and creates separate notifications corresponding to each. Of course, one limitation is that you would have to get in the habit of setting your phone with the screen side down in order to see the notifications.

"Our top priority was to create a functional and intelligent case that still looked sleek, chic, and preserved the aesthetic lines and contours of the iPhone", said the Lune team.

The case is currently in crowd funding mode on Kickstarter. It was launched yesterday and is already over halfway to the $50,000 goal. The company is currently offering white and black colored Lunecases for the iPhone 5/5S and 5C. You can get one for a minimum pledge of $39.

Shipments are expected to begin in August this year.

You mean $39 gets you a gimmick. Why on earth would anyone want the back of their phone to light up? Isn't that what the screen is for if you don't want sound or vibration? The tech these folks are busy developing could be useful in other facets but I fail to see the usefulness of it here. Maybe it's just me.

Really really cool idea, but personally, even with a case on I don't and won't put my phone face down. If anything, I'd like to see notification ideas like this on the front of my phone but from the manufacturer. I still miss the pulsing notification light ring on my old HTC Touch Diamond. Nowadays it's just a single LED that flashes. Boring!

Meanwhile, Android has had a notification light forever. It's very handy and something missing from Apple. Plus, to use this, you need to flip phone over every time.

I like my iphone, but I never understood why apple never implemented some kind of notification indicator like an led for when the screen is off. Android users deserve to laugh at us.
