Lytro hoped its original light field camera would shake up the photography industry back in 2011. While the device was certainly innovative, it ultimately proved to be little more than a novelty – a proof of concept, if you will – that left us wondering what Lytro’s technology could do if mated with a true camera body.
Earlier this year, we got our wish with the Lytro Illum, a traditional style camera with an impressive 30-250mm constant f/2.0 aperture zoom lens and a $1,600 price tag. The shooter was announced to have USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity in addition to an SD card slot and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC under the hood but even still, some of the finer details were missing from the equation.
We now have that missing piece of the puzzle as Lytro has published the camera’s full specifications. Of particular interest is the Illum’s sheer size: 3.38 x 5.70 x 6.53-inches with a weight of more than two pounds.
If you’re a fan of lightweight mirrorless cameras, this will certainly take some getting used to. Full-size DSLR owners, on the other hand, will likely feel right at home with the hefty Illum in their hands.
Lytro also unveiled a WebGL Player that’ll make it easier for developers to add light field images to existing web pages complete with controls for re-focusing and 3D effects. Photography community 500px will be the first to integrate the player, we’re told.
