Make wide monitor have normal aspect ratio?

hello - my dad just got a new wide screen lcd monitor. it is great.
BUT:
everything is stretched horizontally!
it is usable but laying out graphics for publication is impossible!!!
how can i help him set this to show normal height-to-width ratio?

it is hanns-g 19 inch wide screen. thx!!

Just change your resolution to a widescreen resolution. For a 19" the optimal resolution is probably 1440x960 or something around there.
