    Mandrake 8.2 Beta 2

Anyone given this a whirl?? I've downloaded the .iso files and am going to try an upgrade. Apparently a great deal of good, new technology in there.

I got both of the CDs from the UK mirror site in about 2 hours or so. Just use Nero or whatever to burn the ISOs to CDs.

I am going to give this a try, and will post back anything I find out.

This will be a day long remembered.... -Darth Vader.

Oh, and its only been out since monday, I believe.:)
  3. Didou Bowtie extraordinair!

Running 8.1 so far, I don't see the need to upgrade. What's new in the 8.2 ?
  4. Phantasm66 Newcomer, in training

The force is strong with this one.

Wait till I install it (soon) and hopefully I will be able to tell you.

No ship that small has a clocking device...

    An upgrade from 8.1 hasn't gone well.

There are problems with several services crashing, and the environment variables were not set up properly under anything other than my root account; had probs starting X until I editing some config files.

All my OS are drive imaged anyway, so its never anything to worry about for me trying these things.

Will try a clean installation I believe.

It's not the first time I hear Mandrake upgrade to fail. Clean install is the best thing to do with almost every OS, anyway.

Just backup yer home directory and nuke everything else.

Don't be so surprised, your highness....

A clean install has worked wonders.

However, the squid and pro-ftp services crash during startup. I finally gave up on trying to make them work, and just disabled them with ntsysv.

Still looking at this OS (posting from it now, in fact.)

Beta 3 is out, too. Was released yesterday. (Hey Phantasm, are you getting slow? :D)

    Give me a break!

    Okay, I'm gonna download it....

Sound just rename this topic to Mandrake 8.2 Beta!

Anyone knows how long is the MDK8.2 beta cycle?
  12. svtcobra TechSpot Paladin

well, beta 3 is out so I guess the beta 2 cycle has ended.
  13. ryejay98 Newcomer, in training

Actually, Beta 4 is now out ... I believe its the last beta before the RC comes out ...

    Mandrake 8.1

I have Mandrake 8.1, Win XP (got for Xmas), and Win98 for all my old peripherals that haven't got to work in Linux or XP. I think Mandrake 8.1 is solid and efficient especially for Linux newbies like me.
  15. lokem Newcomer, in training

Thanks for the info. Just got 8.1 installed yesterday. Man... It's been a long time since I've touched Linux!
  16. ryejay98 Newcomer, in training

Alright, Ive got a problem with Mandrake :)

Computer works fine with Redhat. But when using Mandrake, I'm having a problem with the mouse. For example, when I start the computer and X starts, the mouse doesn't work. I then log off of X and back in, and the mouse will work....
  17. Mictlantecuhtli TS Special Forces

Which mouse? Did you choose it correctly when installing Mandrake?
  18. ryejay98 Newcomer, in training

I'm not sure what the mouse is ... came with a compaq presario 5400us.

When doing the install, it did not auto detect the mouse. Using keyboard, I navigated to the mouse selection screen and then chose a generic ps/2 mouse. The next screen, letting you test your choice, worked fine and the mouse worked for the rest of the install.
  19. lokem Newcomer, in training

For those interested, Mandrake 8.2 RC1 is out. Grab em and give it a spin. Those pple sure work fast...
  20. Phantasm66 Newcomer, in training

i'm checking the web site every day for the final release of 8.2
