many apps crashing at certain memory usage

i am running windows xp home edition
video card:

Nvidia GeForce FX 5600
256 mb​

as of lately i have ben experiencing a problem where certain programs will stop running at a certain memory usage.

an example is that hl2.exe (half life 2) will get to about 14k memory usage and then just stop running. also when trying to run 3dsmax it gets to about 90k mem usage and stops.

i noticed that when running in safe mod, i do not have this problem, howeve, i cannot run these programs due to safe mode's limitations.

any help?

run memtest86+ to test your memory.

Are you overclocking?

no it is a recent problem. all of these programs worked before and are slowly starting to not work
