Massive ransomware attack spreads across the globe

MalwareBytes Premium covers this sort of attack and some of the other vendors also probably protect against this type of attack . Almost certainly, the chosen security software (Antivirus) chosen by the hit by the Ransomware is using other vendors software that doesn't provide Anti Ransomware protection

This malware targets a vulnerability in SMBv1. No need to patch systems, just disable SMBv1 altogether. SMBv2 was introduced starting with Vista so there's no valid excuse to still be using SMBv1. Windows XP or Windows Server 2000(-03) should not be used in any capacity in a networked environment, or at all for that matter. Their security is far too deprecated to say nothing of their compatibility with more modern systems.
Instead of DISABLE v1, set V2 Negotiate. Heterogeneous systems access {win, mac, unix, linx} needs V1 support.

This is what those back-doors our government wants are good for. That's all there good for! They will bring more harm than good.

"Needs" SMBv1 may be true for systems that haven't been updated for over 6 years, but most of the world has moved on. Samba is widely used in the *nix communities for cross-platform SMB networks, and Samba has supported SMB2 since version 3.6 which was released in 2011. Apple has supported SMB2 since 10.7 (Lion), but the consensus among the OSX community is that Apple's SMB implementation just plain "sucks" even today, which is why people use other solutions for OSX like SMBUp (Samba frontend).

More importantly, SMB2 is not just more secure, it's also WAAAAY faster and more efficient than SMBv1. Any system that uses only SMBv1 becomes a major bottleneck which slows down the entire network whenever something interacts with it. I can keep saying it's foolish to keep using SMBv1 all day but it will fall on deaf ears for anyone still using XP-era hardware, despite the fact that in the long run Windows 7 systems can, and will, be in active service for far longer than XP systems can ever be, owing to the fact that crucial future-facing technologies are supported in Windows 7 like 64-bit support, SSD partition alignment and TRIM support, NVM Express support, GPT and UEFI support, etc.

Ok, ok, I get it. The government can't keep any of us safe. But who to contact to keep one secure? Who... You gonna... Call?

not to shamelessly plug our sister company however we provide secure patching & maintenance for servers and infrastructures for one of the largest datacenters on the globe.

So for individuals, probably your brain + Youtube/Reddit/Forums will be the space to protect you. For companies, there are Patching/Security companies which do this kind of a thing.

I suspect all the IT guys that had their requests turned down by the boss because their suggestions/requests involved time and money will have a lot more credibility now. Big wake up call for penny pinchers that ignored IT methinks

Follow the money .. .. this isn't about bitcoins, .. this is about forced upgrades, (hardware and software) and control which will net billions of dollars, most of it belonging to the taxpayers .. it is another 'millenium bug' . global warming scam, .. always follow the money
