Media failure--winXP

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but it looks pretty interesting. Hey, I have a friend with this problem (Is that always the case?) He can't get into his computer. He gets an error which states that there was a media failure and to check his cables. Previous to this, he said that his computer was running slow. We can't even get a dos prompt on it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem. It sounded like a hard drive problem to me, but he disagrees.

Any help would be great!

Can you boot to Safe Mode???..or Del into the Bios??

Does the BIOS recognize the hard drive? Can you boot from a CD or floppy and run scandisk/chkdsk or even access the hard drive?
