Memory - again!

Recently bought a new stick of memory for my mother's computer (1GB)

Made extra sure I was getting the right type - went to motherboard homepage, crucial.com, and used siSandra to verify the type.

Got a stick off ebay and it arrived today - up until today the computer has been registering the old stick as 256MB when it is, in fact 512MB. Put the Gig stick in and comp wouldn't boot - gave me an error "check computer or system cable, monitor is working."

I took the new stick out, comp booted fine. Took the old stick out, put new stick back in bank0 and computer booted but registered a memory DECREASE and listed memory at 32MB!!!

Should I assume the memory stick itself is faulty, or is it the motherboard?

buying stuff off ebay can be questionable. Your stick may be a conterfeit or just bad. People sell bad stuff all the time on ebay. The only sure way to test it is with memtest86. Buying ebay stuff is a crapshoot.
