Microphone doesnt work

When i plug in my microphone i get a message about configuration and connector sensing i know i have it plugged in right and when i click start it says "please stop all other audio applications before starting" It also suggest i dont have it connected properly! Can you help?

can you give us a bit more info? like pc specs etc? is this a recent thing (used to work but now screwed/never tried before/new soundcard etc)

update drivers etc.. try the mic on another device..

say when you use msn's audio thing or some wave recorder, does it pick up any signal? tried turning off the auto jack sensing?
