Microsoft annoys Chrome users with taskbar pop-up ads in Windows 10

My main laptop already runs Linux - Puppy Linux - it's great, small, runs from DVD, every time it restarts it's like a fresh install (whilst keeping all my documents safe on the hard drive), and it still runs perfectly fine on an AMD Turion 64 laptop (which is now about 10-15 years old!). I use it a lot for web development, my main PC unfortunately uses Windows 10 but that's mainly used for Steam games, and now more Steam games are coming out for Linux it might even be a case of switching to Linux on this one and maybe even just having a VM running Windows.

Using Chrome 64 bit. Have never seen these popups. More BS controversy by "writers" who have nothing to do but complain.

Once upon a time, "you never got fired for buying IBM." Then one day, you did. Microsoft is so destroying its products and the quality of its users' experience that they, too, may soon jump the shark.

I used to love them. I started to hate them with Windows 8. I had high hopes for Windows 10.

Now, more and more every day I really hate them. If only there were an equivalent for Outlook, Word, and Excel to run on Linux Mint, I'd be gone. PLEASE, someone, take up the challenge.
there are already multiple alternatives for office. Both libreoffice and open office exist. There is also google docs for web based office.

As for outlook, both open mail and mozilla's thunderbird immediately come to mind.

You would gladly switch for this reason alone? Wow, what would you switch to?
7 or 8. I really really hate ads and implementing them in OS is a terrible idea and Windows 7 and 8 don't have em like that. That said, I didn't have any ads ever displayed and Windows 10 works really well atm.

If you run say Ubuntu or Mint with LibreOffice you're pretty close as far as Word and Excel go.

I haven't found anything that even remotely works as well as Outlook though. :-(

I just don`t understand them. They said that Windows 10 is here to stay, so give it a rest, first fix it, people will switch once you offer them better product. It will take time but the more time the better because even after almost two years W10 is a mess, even Vista was working better after two years (it worked actually pretty good at that point).

Windows 10 is the worst Windows ever!

clearly someone who never used Windows ME...

Never seen this and I've had Chrom installed on my Win10 machine since the very early beta (also a fast ring insider... so maybe that has something to do with it)

I'm on the fast ring and I haven't seen this yet. Even if they do this as long as it's something that can be closed once and doesn't appear again it's fine. If it keeps nagging people then yes, it would be a big annoying problem.

Don't worry, I'm sure at least two people on this site will ardently defend Microsofts actions here and defend their beloved Windows 10 with flimsy excuses that crumble under their own weight.
And ofc there are also people like you who just like to be hipsters and hate things to look "cool" online.

Even Microsoft tried to bury that one.

Not only I have used Windows ME, I still have it in my retro Dell GX240, it boots up from mechanical HDD in less than 20 seconds, works flawlessly and have served me back in time just as well. Yes, I have seen that way too many people had problems with it, but my experience are quite different. It was short lived anyway, XP arrived just a year later.

Windows ME > Windows 10.

If being cynical of companies who have done very little to earn the trust of their consumers makes me a hipster, then I'm very okay with that. But as I've mentioned in previous posts, I don't hate Microsoft (and I'm not trying to be cool). I want Microsoft to succeed. I want them to stop with the slimy tactics and to start working for and with its customers and to earn the trust and loyalty it once had. Until that day comes, I'll continue to be cynical, call them out on their bullshit and pity the fanboys who still have their rose tinted glasses on.

Win 7 for the win, well at least until 2020 ish

Nah, you can still use it after that. I still find people using Win XP and Vista.

Yeah I'm sure some software companies will continue to support it even after MS stops, but at the end of the day you may get another year & half after2020 out of it before certain software stops being supported with updates etc. Happened with xp, had to move on from that because could no longer do what I wanted because of this issue.

It's very funny how it's always a problem when Microsoft advertises their products with ads but when Google does it (much more intrusive than Microsoft, btw) everything is just fine & dandy. Stop the double standards, either it is ok or it is not. All the tech companies have these annoying pop ups to get you to use their software. Don't like it, sell all of your tech products and keep it moving.

Don't hold your horses :D. Its the year of linux!!@!?!!!! Well have been... for 30 years :D
98% of tech wannabes use Apple and Android. And bunch of them hate on MS for doing same thing as the two before in less intrusive matter... bunch goes crazy.... Told ya, year of linux :D

I dunno what the problem is, you can disable all the MS bulls**t in the control panel.
Yeah it maybe cumbersome or out of reach for a normal user but a quick google will get you the guides.

I have not had one issue with Windows10 since disabling all the "features". It's just now Windows7 with a nicer UI and faster speed.

Hehe that's cute, it sure sounds like you don't use Excel beyond adding and subtracting numbers.

I'm using the "standard" build and it hasn't showed me anything. What's funny is how people look to hate Microsoft for whatever reason, when I got the Chrome is using more battery I did what any other sensible user would've: close it. Voila, never again. "Oooooooh this is so annoying omfg I'm switching to Linux!! Microsoft sucks and can bite my donkey"... over reacting people everywhere... ooooh noes we are the two guys defending Microsoft, due to this post our shares will rise I'm sure of it! :)

You do realize there are non-tech-savvy people that actually like this kind of tips? In this time and age there are people who still have no idea how to install a program, when they see something interesting to them they actually use it. Yet, there are the donkeyholes who actually know how to do that themselves but instead of just closing it, they make a whole freaking fuzz about it because Microsoft is evil by trying to make users actually use the technology at their hands...

you are literally writing hate comments over a pop-up that you've never seen in your life and which does nothing. you have a big X which will close it and you'll never see it again.
"slimy tactic" - pff, please, you are not being cynical, just condescending.

I may have to convert to ... ughh... MAC .

Or Linux

Come on Microsoft! Get a clue already!
Linux is looking more and more appealing. The rate Microsoft is annoying people is only going to give Linux a little boost. Every day I see people contemplating the switch here.

Yeah sure bro, according to people it has been giving a boost all the way from the 90s... yet...

As a dedicated Microsoft user, I am equally appalled that every time I use Google maps, it throws out an ad to me to use Chrome. If I wanted Chrome, I'd use it. Stop wasting my time.
