Microsoft drastically cuts OneDrive storage, free users now get 5 GB

Microsoft is a great company. But how can it pull such dumb moves is beyond me.
A few people gamed the system. So, everyone pays so a few can be punished. Not helpful at all to most people. If they didn't want people to use huge amounts of storage don't lie about it being unlimited. Set a reasonable 15-GB cap instead. Nope, now they're gonna squeeze a lot of smaller users.

I'll stick to my 50gb free storage on Mega.
Might want to move away from Mega. There were some shady things going on after Kim Dotcom parted ways. He mentioned it in a Twitter post and I think TorrentFreak has an article about it.

Look at Sync.com for an end-to-end encrypted service. Their 50GB tier isn't free but very affordable. Unlike Sync.com, Mega staff can access your files as they have the encryption keys.

Tbh they just used the service as intended... it was all fair and legal they did nothing wrong... unlimited means unlimited....

5Gb is too low. it would have been much more reasonable to lower it to 12-15. more people would accept that.
You seriously think 5GB is too little of free storage?

That is equivalent to:
  • 20,000 Photos
  • 90 hours of music
  • 7.5 hours of video

If you can't work within the confines of those limits, you should pay for what you need.

7.5 hours of video?
One 720p movie can take up 5GB.

Anyways, this is great Karma for those who actually thought Microsoft would uphold their end of the bargain.

That pretty much made think about microsoft "If you can't work within the confines of those limits" Microsoft obviously can't work within its own confined limits, its a sad excuse for a company to go against their word just because they only wanted people to use a limited amount of storage vs the listed unlimited.

when I can just use google drive, which has 15GB, then no, 5 isn't enough. there are also a lot of other free cloud storage solutions that offer 5 or more GB. (for example, my xiaomi smartphone has 5GB, apple also offers 5GB)
if MS wants people to use onedrive they need to give them a reason to do it. it's simple marketing.

Or you could think of MS's 5GB as additional storage along with Google's 15GB. I have both as well as another with 4Shared, for a grand total of 45GB soon to be 35GB. But then I don't have a problem using a thumb drive either. At least with the thumb drive, I don't have to worry about finding online service to use my files.

yes, that's true. but I also have to consider how easy it is to manage multiple accounts. if I need the extra space, then you can be sure that I'll use it. in the end, what matters the most is which one I use as my main cloud storage account.
I also use multiple thumb drives and external HDDs. cloud storage is only for work or important things that I can't risk losing because of a drive failure. (which can happen because of many reasons - I had many HDDs/SSDs break in the past and I lost years of work or old photos)

Sarcastic remarks aside though, 5GB should be plenty for the average person. With free online storage that is. Anyone wanting more than 5GB should be willing to pay for it. Especially if they are not willing or responsible enough to carry around a device as small as a USB stick*.

* My 64GB Mushkin Enhanced Atom is only the size of 3 stacked nickles. That's 4 times OneDrive current capacity (12x after cut) and much faster than most ISP rates.

Baidu/Weibo is giving 1 -10 Terrabytes of Cloud storage space and it is free for life . What do I care about a meagre 5Gb of Space. I am on Weibo/Baidu/MEGA for over a year already and nothing "shady" has happened.Even I have moved out of Dropbox because from 50Gb++ during registering a SAMSUNG and then they asked me to pay. Pure Capatistic mentality.
