Microsoft is reportedly planning to host a massive hardware-focused media event this fall in which it’ll introduce two new Lumia-branded smartphones, the Microsoft Band 2 wearable and the Surface Pro 4.

Chinese site WPDang was the first to report the details; The Verge has since confirmed there will be an event in October in which Microsoft plans to introduce multiple hardware products.

The publication said Microsoft is also planning a couple of surprise announcements at the event. Possibilities include additional Surface hardware and a slimmer Xbox One. If you recall, Microsoft was gearing up to announce a Surface Mini alongside the Surface Pro 3 last year but decided to pull the plug on the announcement at the 11th hour.

Regardless of what else is shown, the Surface Pro 4 and the new Lumia handsets will be the stars of the show. Rumors of a Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL have been swirling for months. Could these be the newest additions to Microsoft’s mobile stable? With specs having already hit the web, the only thing really missing is what the devices will look like and how they’ll work with Windows 10 Mobile.

The Surface Pro 4, meanwhile, isn’t expected to be drastically different than the current model. Microsoft previously said it would keep the form factor and charging interface similar for businesses that invest in accessories such as docking stations.

Not much is known about the Band 2, the successor to Microsoft’s first wearable in years. Some fine-tuning of the overall look and feel is probably in the cards as well as more powerful internal hardware but that’s pure speculation.

I hope they release a updated Type Cover keyboard. That is literally the only gripe I have with the SP3.

I would really hope with this update they put a Broadwell CPU and the higher GPU inside. If they want to keep that 1440p screen, I want a little more GPU power to handle it!

Broadwell? You're thinking small. A release so late in the year ? Expect Skylake U.

I am mostly thinking on the level of the GPU, skylakes recent GPUs on desktop were not as good as the broadwell ones which is why I was hoping for the other architecture. Though I would not mind the Skylake one with a nice GPU if they do it!

Broadwell on desktop uses Iris Pro. Normal Skylake so far uses only the fastest Intel HD option. They'll keep Iris pro for a later release possibly. Something along 6700R instead of K.

Anyway, since we are talking about mobile U CPUs for laptops and Surface Pro especially, Skylake's U iGPU will be faster than Broadwell's U iGPU.

Yes, but I am just hoping they put something really nice inside their U lineup this go round (At least on the i7 and maybe i5). I just hope for some more GPU power on the lower levels where it would be the most helpful.

If they're releasing the Surface Pro 4 shortly - and Skylake Mobile doesn't exist yet.... I would think the odds of them using Skylake would be pretty small....
