Microsoft reportedly targeting June for Windows 10 RTM, files trademark for 'Windows 365'

Microsoft’s Windows 10 development process is moving along at a rapid pace. Since its official announcement last September, the Redmond-based company has published multiple technical previews and shared a wealth of other important information relating to its next major operating system.

As we inch closer and closer to its inevitable public release, it’s natural to question when it’ll actually be ready. According to sources as reported by Neowin, Microsoft is targeting a June timeframe for its release to manufacturing (RTM).

That’s a few months earlier than its usual August release but when you think about it, moving it up makes a lot of sense. By getting the OS in the hands of manufacturers earlier, they’ll be able to get products ready in time for the back to school season. I suspect it’s nowhere near as lucrative as the holiday buying season but then again, it’s not something you want to miss out on if you can help it.

In related news, it has come to light that Microsoft recently filed a patent application for the trademark “Windows 365.” The application was filed on January 29 of this year and suggests that Microsoft could be considering the possibility of rolling out a subscription model for Windows.

Either way, we know that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and later users for the first year so I wouldn’t expect a strategy shift anytime soon.

It's absolutely what it means. The glorious leader Steve Jobs died protecting us from the evil Microsoft who tried killing all the hipsters in that Chipotle down the street from Starbucks. The name 'windows' must come from some internal reference of Steve Jobs second coming and is in no way related to previous product lines.

No doubt that as we speak Dark Wizards at Microsoft are torturing innovative ideas out of his soul. It's practically common knowledge at this point. A UFO expert I know told me about it on a subreddit I follow

I'll just use Windows 7 everything works that I have here. I am not going to pay them to use OS per year that's outrageous. They have so much money, they should be paying us to use their software at this rate. I just don't like how everything as to be login with from PC on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Preview. The Windows Phone 8.1 that's a given. Better not charge me to use that OS on the Phone extra. I'll get something to use as phone then.

Don't be ridiculous! I paid $100 for Windows 7 back in 2009. That was 5 years ago, which would currently only equate to $20 a year. This yearly subscription only means you will be paying them more than you normally would have.

Sorry MS, you go to a subscription, I'm gone. Been using MS since dos 3.x, but I'm done on the pay weekly/monthly/yearly crap. I want to OWN the software, not "rent" it, not to mention there is ENOUGH of me "in the cloud" and you can almost bet some features/services etc will REQUIRE a connection to work, so what is from stopping them, once you "agree" to a TOS, that if you don't connect to the internet so often for "security updates" that the functionality will be reduced or just stop working.
I've played around with Mac, I've played around with different versions of Linux...I'll switch rather than pay to play.

I don't see any problem with subscription model provided: a) core OS continue working for legitimate user (with security updates), and they aren't forced to 'upgrade' immediately. b) overall TCO remains lower/or comparable to current pricing schemes.

Technically you don't own any software. If by owning you mean having the ability to do whatever you wish with the product. Can't do that with software.

I think a lot of you look at it the wrong way. IMHO storage hosting is now the real money making business.

You won't get a subscription on Windows. You WILL get a subscription for x TB of Onedrive cloud space, and Microsoft will give you the means to manage your files (Windows 365) and edit them (Office 365) with that subscription.

Windows & Office will be deal sweeteners to get your cloud business.

*derp* I've been thinking about Linux, but the never took the plunge; with so many games on Steam working with Linux now, I think it would be an easy switch. Lets also not forget that Nvidia has also been working to drivers for Linux (AMD too, I think).

Yes, reasonably stupid. M$ can go to hell if they think I'd be interested an OS subscription model. Office 365 is fine because I don't need it. It's either flat out buy a copy of Win 10 from them or turn to piracy as far as I'm concerned. And why are we paying for it anyway? Last I heard legit 7 & 8 users are being upgraded for free anyway.

It is about what will happen beyond Win10. You are absolutely right as for legitimate Win7/8 users there is nothing to worry about. Personally I don't see any problem with their intended future model as long as it is within bounds which I've stated in my previous post.

As long as they continue to offer a one time purchase license, I don't have an issue either. I'm not paying a subscription, no matter what the amount may be. There are many things to worry about on a monthly basis, for me an OS is not one of them.

I love how so many people are already mad at Microsoft for something they think they might do in the future(but most likely never probably never planned to do in the first place. After MS has to make an official announcement to address false rumors everyone will declare victory over the tech giant.

People will find a reason to hate something even if they have to make one up. Really guys, There quite literally has been nothing to suggest that MS will be using a subscription based model for Windows 10. And nothing about the name "Windows 365" suggests that it will be subscription based. If anything at all, what they will have is heavy cloud and office integration IF YOU SO CHOOSE TO HAVE IT.

While some people may not want to live the "Microsoft lifestyle", having access to word, excel, office and one drive on any computer just by logging into my email is incredibly convenient. That and syncing with my phone makes working on the go a lot easier. I never work from my phone, but it is nice to be able to browse and edit important documents whenever I have an extra moment. Keep in mind, all of what I just mentioned is 100% free

Now can we all quit making up baseless rumors and talking about how much we are going to hate MS for it? It's like people want to hate MS but can't find a reason(which is kind of funny, because they give you plenty).

Sorry man, you're out of luck then. Most of the software you "buy" is actually a rented license to use it. Check the EULA of your favorite softwares sometime, you'll be surprised. You never "owned" a single microsoft product, ever, not even MS-Dos 3.x.

Aside that.. The arguement that a recurring license is stupid is quite true, and on that I agree with you.
