Microsoft says that all new processors will only be compatible with Windows 10

Linux has been around for a LONG time....it hasn't caught on in decades, it's not gonna catch on now...

What was Einstein's definition of insanity? Doing the same thing and expecting different results....

Except, they're not doing the same thing. In my opinion, it's only in recent years that the popular linux distros have been good enough for what they eventually intend to do.

Also, how much marketing have you seen from linux distros? Something around about zero? clearly they're not trying to be a serious competitor to windows or OSX. Yet.

Will windows 10 stop working on older archs then?
I think ms won't be adding support for the new instruction sets that new cpus bring (onto pre win10). Old cpus can't/won't just get new instruction sets, so they should have nothing to worry about.

If someone knows more, then please tell us.

If I understand this correctly, MS is telling these chipmakers to REMOVE code that would otherwise allow earlier windows to work on those systems??
I have no words...
Maybe one...Linux

I have another word for you... LOL

Nice MS...push more and more people to Apple or Linux.
Me thinks, that the push to ONLY allow Win10, is their attempt, that after the
majority of users are on Win10, they will start charging a monthly/yearly fee
for Win10. They have seen their business model, from the 80's change, along
with the ease of piracy of their OS, and seeing other software switch to a monthly
fee, are interesting in generating a steady monthly cash flow, instead of having
no real incoming cash except when there is a new OS.

Yes because the whole Microsoft Users Universe loves Apple.

I hope this backfires on all of them. I sure as **** won't upgrade to a OS limited CPU.

How have you done it so far then?? It's like they said already and I quote:
This is nothing different to what they have always done.

They simply won't add support for NEW instruction sets to their old OS's.
It's quite simple to understand.

yeah...let me know when that 'Linux' juggernaut/revolution catches fire. :p

It just kills me. Linux is only used by a TINY FRACTION of people, and, there is a reason for that. Arcane, difficult and crappy. No games, no apps, no use outside of servers.

And every last one has to come out to ***** and moan.

Linux users are like vegans... they can't keep quiet about it for a freaking whole minute.
You're my favorite

Lol.... Not talking about "them".... People have been talking about how great Linux is and how "some day" people will wake up and adopt it en masse for years... Yet, despite this, and despite Microsoft's stunts throughout the years, Linux continues to be irrelevant to the big picture.

Yes, Linux has improved... No, it hasn't made any difference.... It never will either...

Then clearly they are zealots, because linux distros have not been ready for quite some time.

And they're not zealots now? Alas, the numbers seem to show the lie in that...

https://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0

As of last month, 1.66% use linux

https://www.netmarketshare.com/oper...10&qpcustomd=0&qpsp=2014&qpnp=1&qptimeframe=Y

Last year, it was 1.5%...

So about .16 of a percentage point in a year... not too shabby... in about 300 years, Linux will have over 50% market share!!

Did I say they're not zealots now? Zealots exist.

I also never said that Linux market share was pretty. What I am saying is that it's going to stay that way, unless more programs are being ported to Linux.

Bringing a Linux sales pitch to a Windows thread is not going to fly well. If we wanted to hear a Linux sales pitch, we would find a Linux thread. Ohh and I am open minded, just not in this thread.

As much as I would like to comment on OS trends I will side step that topic to pose a question! What about VM support? Why not just host Win.old on VM.new?

So M$ is going to get their spyware out there, even if the have to bribe, collude with, or bully chipzilla to do it?

Because the way this article is worded, it's saying that M$ is going to tell CPU manufacturers what OS they're allowed to manufacturer CPUs to support. Heavy stuff. I hope my old boxes run forever and ever.

You're favourite is some person who's being a **** to other people because they have different opinions.

Your*

It's ussualy funny, that's why, because people don't care to read or think that everyone has the time and resources to spend learning an OS that is not on par with either Microsofts or Apple in it's ease of use. Also, because it's as simple as reading the whole thing and not sticking with the click-bait fad-creater maybe even a bit anti-microsoft-biased (Was going to use another word) title. Also Microsoft Windows adoption is superior than those of Apples, so for most "normal" computer based users Apple is as vudu as a Linux distro.

Sorry your Linux sales pitch wasn't heard.

So... when you buy a new PC in 5 years, you can put Windows 7 on it... it WILL run... but WHY WOULD YOU?!?!?! Windows 10 (or 11 or 12, or whatever) will be the newest OS and you're going to want to install that on your PC....[ ].....
Well, because Windows 10 is mostly an excuse/vehicle for M$ tracking. It's loaded with key loggers and "PC phone home" modules, which make it pretty much like sitting in M$' Redmond headquarters, every time you sit down at the console.

You obviously can't tell the difference between, "obsolete software", and software which has had forced obsolescence inflicted upon it. In other, easier to understand terms, they kill their own product so they can continue to make money by fixing something which really isn't broken.

Adobe really has mastered this process. Every time on of the major camera manufacturers brings out a new RAW codec, Adobe won't update some of its products to support it. Hence, if you keep your cameras up to date, you have to buy their programs about every year, to year and a half. And them there's the whole "Photoshop only in the cloud now" thing.

I picture M$ moving in that direction, and in not so many years, your new "Surface Tablet", is going to be doing an impression of a Chrome book, sharing cloud space for its OS with Google. After all, wouldn't that make it "lighter", or "thinner", and wouldn't the average imbecile on the street, lap that s*** up?

"While Microsoft is pushing this policy change as the natural phasing-out of the decade-old Windows 7, which it says was designed for older PC architecture"

The best part about this, I almost fell over laughing at this, because we all know under it's skin Windows 10 is Windows 8.1 which is Windows 8, which is Windows 7 and finally which is Windows Vista. So really Windows 10 is designed for decade-old PC architecture and Microsoft is ashamed to admit this, instead lets software implement limitations on all future CPUs to try and make Windows 10 more attractive...

Makes me so glad CPU technology for the iCore gen had already attained such a high level of performance that presently I see no need to upgrade, and this is from my first gen i7, I also have the means to go to a 4790k if I really needed to, but I barely see the need.

Just like windows 7, products like X Dark x64 will find their way into a Windows 10 version, removing all the BS and spyware, remove and replace BS apps and remove the damn 'spyware'. looking fwd to that day.

I've already encountered a scenario where I couldn't load Windows 8 on an older Xeon workstation, got an error mentioning the CPU didn't support the latest security standards. Windows 7 is apparently the last OS supported on that platform. Guess what? Went with OpenSUSE. Yeah, Linux isn't for everyone, but it's a lot better than it used to be. I'm impressed to see support from Steam for games.

Excellent! Hope this works out for you! Byeee

Make the change my friend. I've been using Linux Mint and haven't looked back.

Ahhh... more unsubstantiated drivel... shouldn't be surprised, as it's coming from you... Windows 10 may have user tracking - so does Apple.... it's NOT spyware - and it certainly doesn't have keyloggers...

Obsolete = no longer produced or used; out of date.
Obsolete software as of 2020 = Windows 7, 8.1

Putting Windows 7 on a NEW PC in 2020 would be the equivalent of putting Windows XP on a NEW PC next year... IE: STUPID!!

Maybe it's "planned obsolescence" but so is pretty much everything else in our society then... blaming Microsoft is just inane... Why do we need a new PC in the first place? Planned obsolescence by Intel? Why do we need new stereos? New smartphones?

Getting angry at MS for saying they won't support their OBSOLETE OSes on NEW PCs is just hiding your head in the sand. If you don't like it, just use your OLD PCs forever - they can run Windows 7 indefinitely!

You can't possibly know that. Give Ubuntu time and they'll go for the mainstream audience. In the meantime, they can just let Microsoft do stupid stuff like this.

Linux hasn't taken off yet, because most people are still ignorant towards it. No linux distro advertises.

Windows has been in the public eye for a long time. There is nothing stopping any distro from competing at a later date. There is no need for them to do it now. Quite frankly, I'd rather that people who are extremely ignorant stay away from the platform.

I agree with what you're saying. I do believe Linux as a free OS will never take off though. It's been around for a long time and there have been some very good versions that have released. Just don't forget, for Linux to take off, it'll also take companies releasing software compatible with it. I know Steam supports Linux, but there really isn't very many more major companies that do.
