Microsoft to end support for old versions of Internet Explorer next year

Just curious: why can't you "upgrade" IE? I'm using Win 7 and had no problem installing IE11. Other things, not so much...

For me, the issue isn't that MS (or anyone else) discontinues support for old versions, but that the old versions are not compatible, or easily upgraded, with new versions. Why should you be unable to access a site because you are using IE8 instead of IE11? Or for that matter, that your device drivers for XP won't work with newer Windows OSs?
