As a desktop OS in a business/production environment it would not be a suitable replacement for windows. Where I work linux is not compatible with much of the software required. With Virtualbox I'm assuming that you're implying the use of a windows VM? If so then you haven't replaced windows if you're still using it. When I say replacement I mean removing windows all together from the equation.
What you see there is less a failing of Linux & more M$ bullying to ensure that ONLY their OS is compatible. Since most Linux distributions don't have the deep pockets of M$, the only way software can be made compatible is if a kind Linux dev makes it so. A VM of 7, running on Linux, is a temporary fix for programs which refuse to run within WINE. However, I've managed to find suitable replacements in open-source for all of the things I do. So much is now cloud/browser-based that it's gotten much easier. True, there will always be a few programs which won't run, but that's just the way it is, ala no Final Cut Pro for Windows.
